It is easy to look at a child who bullies and see only a villain. But if we want to raise resilient children, we have to teach them to look at the world with a lens of clarity and, where possible, boundary-tested compassion. To do that, we must understand the “why” behind the behavior.
Children do not wake up one morning and decide to be cruel for the fun of it. Bullying is almost always a misdirected distress signal.
When a child lashes out, makes fun of a peer, or orchestrates social exclusion, they are usually trying to solve an internal problem with an external behavior. Here is what is often happening beneath the surface:
- A Deficit of Genuine Power: Children who feel powerless at home, invisible in their families, or overwhelmed by academic or emotional struggles will often seek a counterfeit version of power by dominating someone else.
- Displaced Pain: The old adage is true: hurt people hurt people. A child who is treated harshly, criticized constantly, or neglected will often project that exact treatment onto a classmate to offload their own discomfort.
- A Need for Safe Belonging: Sometimes, bullying is driven by fear of isolation. A child may join in on exclusionary behavior simply because they lack the emotional security to stand alone, choosing to be the aggressor rather than the target.
When we explain this to our children, we take away the bully’s secret weapon: the power to make your child feel inadequate. If your child understands that a bully’s cruelty is actually a reflection of that bully’s internal brokenness, not a reflection of your child’s worth, the words lose their venom. We teach our kids that we don’t excuse the behavior, but we recognize that a roar is often just a mask for a very small, frightened voice inside.
